Old Government House in the early 1900s.
Watch this space - images of the newly restored House will be in next edition of Venews! |
After closing in 2007 for a two year extensive restoration, Old Government House is almost finished and looking glorious. In just five months time, The House will be officially open for events. In fact, the Old Government House team is already taking advance bookings.
Imagine staging an important event in the grand, sweeping elegance of Queensland’s most important heritage building, in the heart of Brisbane City.
Nestled by the City Botanic Gardens, Old Government House was the official residence of the Governors of Queensland up until 1909, and was the first significant building built in Queensland.
Boasting colonial architecture, period features, beautiful high ceilings and picturesque grounds, this classic heritage building provides the perfect backdrop for a wide range of events and functions in a timeless, elegant setting.
Site visits will be available from April. During this time, the events team will be able to show you just how the spaces within Old Government House will add that extra element of distinction and elegance to your event. The spaces include:
- The Hall, the heart of The House featuring sweeping feature staircase and hand crafted cascading crystal chandelier
- The Dining Room, overlooking the front lawn and Botanic Gardens, featuring wrap around verandahs
- The Drawing Room, with original fireplace, wrap around verandahs, and overlooking the back lawn and landscaped gardens
- The Billiard Room, featuring original wood panelling and dining table, ideal for intimate dining or private meetings
- The Nursery, abundant with natural light and a private balcony, this is the perfect meeting room
- The Courtyard, an open yet private space with a European feel and surrounded by the beautiful architecture of The House.
- The Landscaped Gardens, all newly redeveloped.
The events team have been busy promoting The House, and recently kicked off their wedding promotional campaign at the Your Local Wedding Guide Expo. Held in January, the expo went for three days and was attended by over 3000 people!
Corporate events are next, and the venue hire information will be launched in the coming weeks.

First it was for the filming of a TV commercial shot on the Parade Ground, and then as part of a national road show. On both occasions, the venues at the QUT Creative Industries Precinct, Kelvin Grove have been just what BMW needed.
In 2006, the venue technicians - working with film crews and lighting designers – transformed the Parade Ground. Utilising the large outdoor projection facilities together with extensive lighting, the space was completely changed into a film set.
In 2008, the Block provided the perfect white space as the platform to launch the latest BMW 7 series to their Queensland clients. The high ceilings of the venue, built-in technical capabilities and the Precinct’s clean, modern backdrop worked well with the look and feel that BMW wanted to deliver.
The block has large entry points and has easy off street access for cars and other large vehicles.
For more information about the block and any other space at the Creative Industries Precinct, contact us at events@qut.edu.au or on 07 3138 4463.
